Study of a Woman

Francois Krige

Unknown

Charcoal

In his charcoal work, Francois Krige embraces the contrast between carefully rendered shadows and confident, yet loose linework. In this study, all that suggests the body is a light, gestural line. The rest of the artwork Krige allows the viewer to fill in. Effectively one gets the sense that he has captured a moment in time, as fugitive as the line itself. The lack of details in the body suggests a spontaneity, it seems as though it was just a moment in time. A quick drawing capturing this exact moment.
