Man with pipe

Francois Krige

1986

Oil on Canvas

Much of Francois Krige’s work displays his desire to capture the essence of the people he met. This painting by a man smoking his pipe is presumably of a fellow local in Montague – the small town in South Africa where Krige spent the latter part of his life. Krige wanted to capture people in their everyday moments. Krige spent his earlier days studying in Europe and was inspired by the ideas of Post-Impressionism. Looking at these works from his time in Montague, one is reminded by the French artist Paul Gauguin’s portraits of people living in the rural areas of Tahiti.
