Jade Sculpture

Jade Rock

This awe-inspiring piece captures the symmetry between the monks and the labourers, through the finest attention to detail. With a lighter hue of jade than what is more recognisable to their western counterparts, this sculpture inlays the saints watching over the building of the Great Wall of China. The wall itself dates back to early 7th century BC as ancient Chinese states solidified their borders against the northern tribes. With the vast changes over the last millennia, these treasures of art are important to remind us of how much humans can achieve when working on a common goal. As the backgrounds for monks and workers were different, the image of them coming together for a project that would span for centuries and over twenty-one thousand kilometres carves a sharp story of the indomitable will of the east.
