This gold-gilded frame is reminiscent of the 17th and 18th-century French aristocracy and art coverings. Those centuries saw a boom in the ostentatious in every form of life, and art was no exception. The finely gilded leaflets in three rows, capped with the golden hue and the sturdiness of the oak frame, all speak to the kings of France and their taste is not just art, but all the richness that encompassed them. The reign of each Louis, from XIII to XVI, made possible a literal golden age of frame making, all centred around Paris, with carved oak and gold leaf surfaces central to the style and now it is very own namesake within the art of making these beautiful pieces.
