Wumu wood
This Chinese mirror frame is made from “wumu”, and stands at “”cm. The black with gold inlays have been traditional in Chinese culture for frames over the last century, and would typically depict words, or “mottos”, moons, lotus or peony flowers, cranes, and dragons. This piece is more highly ornate, as the inlays have more detail than traditional frames. The wumu, which translates to ebony, typically grows in a small tree and therefore is used sparingly with furniture. We generally never see large traditional Chinese furniture in ebony, but rather frames, small carvings that replace their jade counterparts, and precious decorative objects. Therefore whenever a piece is carved in these dark hues, it is a prized possession.
