For a period in his life, Francois Krige was also a war artist. During World War II, Krige was commissioned to go to North Africa and the Mediterranean to paint some of the effects of the war. His duties as a war artist meant that he had to document the horrors of war, including the terrible bombings in Cairo, Egypt. In this portrait, Krige records a soldier, using his distinctive in his confident linework and colour scheme.
