Veiled young woman
Maud Frances Eyston Sumner
1902–1985
Watercolour on paper
Maud Sumner is another noteworthy South African artist who developed a unique manner of depicting everyday life around her. Sumner was one of the few South African artists of that time placed on an international platform due to her experience of French, English and South African life. Her colourful style was strongly influenced by French artists, George Desvallières and Maurice Denis, two Neo-Impressionists in the early 1900s. She particularly inherited their distinctive approach to the division of colour, which is evident in this artwork ‘Veiled young woman’.
