Wim Botha

1995

Bronze cast mounted on sandstone

Wim Botha is a contemporary South African artist that works across different disciplines, including wood, books, acrylics and oil paint, although his earlier works were rooted in bronze. Botha’s work is largely inspired by religious icons and government texts, which surface in the artworks themselves. This iconic portrait revisits symbols from Western art history. The bust resembles a religious figure, his face etched with a pained expression. It was made during Botha’s time at the University of Pretoria in the early 90’s. The artwork formed part of a project on bronze casting as part of his university curriculum.
