Restone Maambo is one of Zambia’s up-and-coming contemporary artists who is now based in Cape Town. His acquisition represents Hugo Jankowitz’s move in collecting living contemporary African collection. This large piece, Sangoma, is an artwork that struck Jankowitz when he visited Maambo. Even though the piece was still incomplete, Khoi-San Sangoma had bewitched the collector, who worked with Restone to finish the artwork before bringing it to rest at21 Nettleton. At first glance, a powerful woman dominates the foreground, and in the background, an approaching storm gathers. Yet, upon closer inspection, the imprint of traditional San rock art reveal themselves.
