Francois Krige
Unknown
Charcoal
This nude artwork by Francois Krige stands apart from the rest of the artworks in this Montagu collection. It is the only figurative artwork that focuses on the body rather than the expressions of the face. In all his other works in this collection, Krige focussed his attention on the subject's face, capturing their emotions and the way the features interact with light and texture. However, in this artwork, the focus is purely on the human form, an aspect which is secondary to his other works. This artwork looks like the type of sketch that would be done in a life drawing class. He even alludes to a background in this artwork, using negative space to position the subject on a chair or sofa.
