Jade Rock

Since 3,000 B.C. Jade has been the prevalent emperors’ gem of choice, and Jade Dragons are symbols of power, strength, and good luck. This sculpture, showcasing the dragon’s details in sharp relief, is a testament to the jade workers of old who would look at a piece and decide what should be carved from its beauty, and its beautiful flaws. Traditionally in China, the dragon has been a symbol of absolute imperial might, with each emperor of the Tang dynasty adorning his robe with the powerful motif. This piece, with all of its intricate line work and attention to detail, is keeping with the historical importance of the dragon in Chinese culture, especially the concise nature of yin and yang balance with their scales.
