French Chair Set

France

Late 19th Century

Unknown

This hall chair set comes from late 19th, early 20th century France, where the gilded elegance was replaced with a simpler, more practical style of finely carved wooden bodies and an ornate upholstery. These pieces are carved from walnut, with their original finals, each one unique. While hall chairs typically have animals carved in them, this set is from a more austere style, while not losing the elegance with the ornate symbols placed within the seat’s base. Hall chairs have been a typical sight throughout Europe over the centuries, as the immensely popular style of the carved straight back remained in the houses of lords, nobles, and royals. Recently the style has seen a resurgence, as the craftsmanship and practice of family cresting alongside their Latin or French mottos has been sought after within the last couple of decades.
