In most of his female portraits in the Montague Collection, Francois Krige has a different approach to capturing the female form in his artworks. Most of them are done in charcoal or pencil, as seen here, in contrast with his richer oil portraits. Krige’s confident linework and careful shading manage to capture something delicate in his female figures. Here, the simple, suggestive lines he uses for sketching her body also offer a contrast to the detailed charcoal shading he uses for her face.
