Domestic Worker
Francois Krige
1986
Charcoal
This is another domestic worker from the town of Montagu. These ‘burghers of Montagu’ are part of a common theme of the artwork Francois Krige created in his later life. Krige was a multi-disciplinary artist, with most of his works being done in charcoal, pencil or pen and wash, and increasingly oil in his later life. In many of his other female sketches in this collection, Krige combines pencil and charcoal to sketch out the details of the subject’s face. However, in this artwork, the entire study was done in charcoal. He has also used more assertive lines throughout the artwork, instead of letting some details melt away, as in his other works.
