This piece’s inspiration comes from the Coptic sect of church orthodoxy. The legend of St. Catherine, or Katharine of Alexandria, dates back to Roman Egypt times, around 305 A.D. during a time of Christian martyrdom throughout the empire. Catherine is typically depicted with her wheel and pen, as she is the patron saint of educators, craftsmen (spinners, potters) among many, many others.
