Biedermeier Writing Desk
Austria
1815-1848
Unknown
The Biedermeier Period saw a romantic return to domestic life throughout Central Europe after the Napoleonic Wars ended in 1815. People turned their attention away from politics to focus on their home life and the arts. Letter writing was one of the many art forms that saw a revival at this time. This Biedermeier writing desk would have been the centre of a middle-class person’s home. It offers a space to explore literature and letter writing, which rose to prominence in the private home. This desk follows the classic Biedermeier style too, softer than the rigid Empire style, but without being as steeped decor in the Directoire flair. This modest design is executed in light wood and avoids frivolous ornamentation. This quintessential utilitarian representation of Biedermeier furniture originates from Austria in the early 1800s.
