In this painting by Charles Kamangwana, we are overlooking two subjects with their back turned to us. We are drawn into imagining their conversation, as they sit on baskets selling apples under a sun umbrella. The diagonal lines of the fence, with the trees, draw our eyes down the street, and there is a sense that the painting scene continues. The rich colour palette is typical of Kamangwara’s earlier style, employing dominant primary colours to communicate the vibrancy of Zimbabwean life.
