This vibrant still life employs similar warm tones that have become a trademark in Francois Krige’s other works in the Montague Collection. Krige spent some time abroad in Europe, travelling between Spain, Germany, Austria, France and Italy, and he was heavily influenced by his European encounters. The perspective in this painting is somewhat skewed in a way that would be interesting for its time. The bright yellow background has also been picked up by the frame, adding to the artwork’s intense colour. This colourful piece brings to mind the work of a famous European artist Vincent van Gogh.
