Francois Krige’s studies focus entirely on depicting his subject, and often they are portrayed with no context around. Yet in addition to capturing the expressions of his sitters, Krige does pay particular attention to the clothing they are wearing. Often the subject from his portraits is wearing garments that would be used during everyday work in a rural village at the time- capturing the realism of how people lived. Hugo Jankowitz pays careful attention to how the artworks are framed. The cardboard ‘paspatour’ in this piece adds an interesting textural element.
